Divorce and Facebook: What should people post?

Many Florida marriages end in divorce. In fact, research from the Census Bureau found that Florida had the seventh highest rate of divorce in the United States in 2015. Divorce is difficult to go through, but people should make things easier on themselves by not posting all their dirty laundry on Facebook and other social media platforms.

When in doubt, it is best to avoid posting too much on Facebook while going through a divorce. Many people have a problem with oversharing. Friends and family members may not want to hear all the little details, but people posting too much on Facebook may be doing themselves a disservice once the divorce gets into the courtroom.

Things to avoid

Close friends and family members should hear about a divorce in person rather than through Facebook. Both spouses should take the time to inform people close to them of what is happening. That way everyone is on the same page.

Attorneys can bring up Facebook posts and comments as evidence. Therefore, spouses should avoid bashing one another on Facebook. In some cases, the best thing to do is simply delete or deactivate Facebook for the time being.

Things to do

In the event divorcing spouses are going to remain active on Facebook, there are a few tips to keep in mind. Any posts about a spouse should be positive in nature. If a spouse is going to post something pertinent to the failing marriage, then the person should ask, "Is this necessary?" Sometimes the best course of action is to take a deep breath and really think about a post before putting it up for everybody to see.

Spouses going through a divorce should be amicable toward one another in person and online. It will make for a lot fewer headaches during the divorce process, which is difficult enough already.
