Smart moves when facing a toxic divorce

While most people would rather a divorce be a calm and amicable proceeding, some circumstances can make that impossible. For those who have been married to a narcissistic or noxious person, a toxic divorce may be inevitable. In Florida and elsewhere, those who are anticipating such a split can prepare. There are a few smart moves to make when facing such a situation.

One important consideration is to get everything in writing. Verbal agreements are worth nothing in situations like this one. Instead of arguing over the phone or in person, use emails, text messages, letters and such to communicate. This provides records and proof for the court of anything that has been said between the two parties.

It is also important to gather all financial paperwork as soon as it is feasible to do so. A controlling spouse may refuse to provide paycheck stubs, tax records, bank statements, etc for a divorce, so it is vital to collect as much as possible even before filing. Be aware that this type of spouse may even lie about assets to suit his or her own purposes.

Of course, it is best to leave children out of vicious battles between their parents. In cases of abuse in Florida, it may be necessary to obtain a restraining order against an overbearing spouses. This may be needed for the safety of both the divorcing spouse and any kids involved. A divorce attorney can help with any of these steps and guide the client in how to proceed and survive a toxic divorce.
